AS/NZS testing requirements for height safety equipment

AS/NZS 1891.4:2009 Industrial fall-arrest systems and devices – Selection, use and maintenance.

Every 6 months By a height safety equipment inspector.

• Harnesses, lanyards, associated personal equipment.
• Fall arrest devices (external inspection only).
• Ropes and slings.
• Horizontal or vertical lifelines – fibre rope and webbing, webbing.

Every 12 month By a height safety equipment inspector.

• Anchorages – drilled-in type or attached to timber frames.
• Anchorages other types – as recommended by the manufacturer to a maximum of 5 – yearly.
• Horizontal and vertical lifelines – steel rope or rail – as recommended by the manufacturer to a maximum of 5 – yearly.

AS/NZS1657:2013 Fixed Platforms, Walkways, Stairways and Ladders.

• Testing in line with the manufacturers recommendations.
• RISSafety as a manufacturer recommend a 5 yearly inspection frequency on all products installed to this standard.

AS/NZS 4488.2:1997 Industrial rope access systems – Selection, use and maintenance.

• Permanently installed anchorages shall be inspected by a competent person at intervals not exceeding 12 months.

Additional State Requirements WA Occupational Safety and Health Regulations 1996.

• A person who, at a workplace, is an employer, the main contractor, a self-employed person or the person having control of the workplace must ensure that an anchorage at the workplace is inspected by a competent person and;
  
  
  • 1) in the case of an anchorage that is permanently fixed and in regular use, inspected at intervals not greater than 6 months; and
    
    
  • 2) in the case of an anchorage that is permanently fixed but not in regular use, inspected before it is used.
