A new four-lane road, called the Outer Circulating Road, has been built to help traffic circumvent the Toowoomba CBD. The multi-million dollar project also includes a major three-span bridge over the West and East creeks.

Easy As Lifting a Bridge - Kennards Hire Lift & Shift

Leading cranes and heavy haulage company Tutt Bryant Heavy Lift & Shift were contracted to transport and install 39 concrete girders for the roadway. To lift the girders into place Tutt Bryant hired a new modular 300 tonne spreader beam from Kennards Hire Lift & Shift.

"The girders varied in size from 14 metres weighing 35 tonne to 35 metres weighing up to 65 tonne," explained Trevor Haylott, Tutt Bryant Queensland State Manager.

Previously girders were lifted by slings at a 60 degree angle via anchor points. Today, many manufacturers are reluctant to put holes or ports in the girders.

"We needed a spreader beam capable of lifting 65 tonne at approximately 30 metre centres," said Trevor.

"Kennards Hire Lift & Shift were able to provide the perfect solution."

The spreader beam is the newest addition to the extensive range of bars and beams available for hire from Kennards Hire Lift & Shift, which vary from 250kg to 300 tonne. With a maximum width of 26 metres the unit weighs 6,600kg when fully assembled, excl. shackles or rigging gear.

The 300 tonne spreader beam is highly versatile and comprises of sections that vary from 500mm up to 6.0m. This provides flexibility in configurations and variety of lengths compared to end caps with fixed beams. This enables the 300 tonne spreader beam from Kennards Hire Lift & Shift to span from 2.0m – 13m (300T), 13.5m – 22.0m (250T), 22.5m – 24.0m (200T) and 24.5m up to 26.0m (150T) WLL with a sling angle of 60°.

"A major benefit of the 300 tonne spreader beam from Kennards Hire Lift & Shift is that it's a modular unit," Trevor said. "This provides great flexibility and enabled us to reduce the length as needed and tailor it to each individual girder, which was important."

It's this versatility that makes the 300 tonne spreader beam ideally suited to a range of lifting solutions and industries. These include the mining, oil and gas industry as well as major civil construction and infrastructure developments and shipping ports.

With its origins dating back to 1938, Tutt Bryant Group has long been associated with quality, excellence and professionalism in the construction and heavy equipment industry. Today it is a diverse construction equipment provider of cranes, heavy haulage and specialised transport, including planning and support services. Tutt Bryant's national crane fleet extends to dry and wet hire crawler, hydraulic and mobile cranes including a massive 1600 tonne crawler crane.

"The Kennards Hire Lift & Shift team were extremely professional and helpful. For various reasons the project experienced delays and we were very appreciative of how accommodating they were and ensuring the spreader beam was available when needed.

"Having a 26 metre modular spreader beam capable of lifting 150 tonne available to hire when required is very useful. It's certainly a lifting solution we envisage using again on future projects," Trevor added.
