Non-disruptive 'Keyhole Surgery' stabilises mine crushing plant

The main structure and the columns of a belt line filter had originally been built over poorly compacted mine overburden, so they had lost ground support over time.

Repeated wetting from the out-of-level filter line had exacerbated the situation.

The belt filter structure had become 32mm lower one side than on the other. A trip and slip hazard was beginning to threaten from water and material run off in the area.

It was important that this very productive plant should lose as little production time as possible while the problem was fixed. So the plant construction manager called Uretek Ground Engineering, because they could often rectify such problems fast and while production continues.

Uretek's State Manager, Arthur Winrow, inspected the site and declared that Uretek could achieve exactly that: fast re-levelling and re-support without interrupting production.

Uretek penetrometer assessments of the foundation ground disclosed weak strata at 1500 mm and 2500mm depths. Uretek expanding structural resins were injected down to compact and strengthen both those strata at the same time.

From directly under the structure footings Uretek structural resin injections brought the line back to its correct levels, thus correcting a very annoying problem that might have become very disruptive. It was certainly a problem that had to be fixed before the line could be speeded up and before any extension could be made to the busy crushing plant.

No interruption to the plant operation

The production process continued without interruption for the five days of Uretek work. The self-contained Uretek work rig ensured minimal intrusion on the site. Uretek is often called 'keyhole surgery' because the method involves no excavation, no interruption, no curing time and no appreciable weight is added to the already stressed ground.

The height difference between two sides of the conveyor belt was reduced to between 7 and 10mm of each other. This satisfied the brief so well that the crushing plant belt line was able to be speeded up very considerably, allowing the plant's through-put to be increased significantly.
