Temperature sensors for safe manufacturing and quality control

Thermal imagers has been widely used for safety monitoring in the hazardous equipment as well as quality check of the finished products.

Online temperature measurement technique has been used for several years in R&D and manufacturing environment. The technology utilizes infrared temperature measurement system, which detects infrared radiation energy emitted by all materials at the temperature above absolute zero.

A non-contact measurement method offers capabilities to capture temperature data of moving objects and of objects in hazardous surroundings safely at optimum conditions, which is necessary for equipment maintenance, process control and quality control in manufacturing industry. The wear-free, fast and high-precision measurement sensors also provide decisive advantage, particularly to measure target in a difficult-to-access area. Conventional infrared imager operates with spectral wavelength of 8-14µm, which can be inaccurate when used in different process due to difference in materials emissivity. As technology advances, a wide-range of temperature sensors has been developed to suit different industrial applications.

Operating at a wavelength of 7.9µm, the TIM G7 VGA thermal imager eliminates any radiations from the objects behind or adjacent to glass surface, and is specifically designed for the glass industry. This gives accurate temperature reading even on very thin glass or thin-walled objects. In the metal processing industry, the TIM M1 thermal camera operating at 1µm wavelength gives a more accurate and stable temperature measurement due to the significantly higher metal emissivity at this measurement range. The accurate temperature reading will enable early detection of anomalies in furnace operations and prevent formation of molten glass or iron, that could potentially halt multi-million dollars production.

Large manufacturing plants often require high temperature furnaces and boilers to heat-up process and handle high-temperature products. These are high-risk equipment with potentials for severe injury, or even death as a result of equipment failure due to their high operating temperature. Thermal imager can detect hot spots in the furnace wall and other heat generation units, which are generally caused by degeneration of refractory materials. This enables operators to take maintenance actions before a catastrophic failure could occur.

Another model of infrared temperature sensors, thermoMETER CT, with their small spot size, high speed and large distance measurement, are extremely popular in the PCB and chips manufacturing industry. The small laser spot size is able to detect tiny, temperature critical parts in the circuit boards to identify defects in quality control stages. This model also supports measurement at various wavelengths with large temperature range, and is ideal for measuring temperature of most materials in a wide range of other industrial applications, from maintenance and process monitoring tasks, to R&D and test laboratory.

More often than not, it is difficult to obtain the emissivity data of the measured objects at high temperature. The fibre-optic 2-color ratio pyrometer is specifically designed for this application by comparing the radiation signal at two different wavelengths. It also offers capabilities to minimize errors caused by objects in the measuring line, which could weaken the infrared radiation received by the pyrometer. With high temperature measuring range of 700oC– 1800oC and able to withstand ambient temperature of 250oC without cooling, this sensor is ideal and is primarily used in metal processing application.
