Torque limiters tame overloads

Machine and drive components are often vulnerable to damage caused by overloads.

As a machine designer or maintenance engineer responsible for drive upgrades, one of your top priorities should be to protect against operator injury and machine damage due to overloads.

Limiting the torque that can be transmitted through a system is one way to do it.

A variety of torque limiters can do the job. From basic shear pins to friction and ball dented units, some with pneumatic or electrical controls.

Take a look at Deserti Meccanica torque limiters that protect both operator and machine from harm.

Deserti Meccanica LS series friction type torque limiter

For many applications, a friction type torque limiter is more practical. This device operates similar to the brakes on a car. A drive component, such as a belt pulley, chain sprocket or gear is sandwiched between two friction linings.

When the preset torque value is exceeded the friction torque limiters allow immediate release from the excess torque applied to the transmission; they do not need resetting and permit an immediate visual inspection of operating conditions.

  • Torque range from 2 to 12,000 Nm
  • Maximum bores to 140mm
  • Various model options with alarm system, high sensitivity, co-axial coupling types

Deserti Meccanica LASS ball (roller) type torque limiter

The ball detent type limiter operates within a series of balls (or rollers) on one side of the device (control element) that rest in mating sockets or detents in a pressure flange on the opposite side.

The entire device rotates with the driven machine until an overload occurs, at which point the balls slide out of the two mating halves moving axially apart against a preset  spring force.

Tripping of the limiters is accurate and instant through a micro switch being in contact with the limiters mobile half-coupling.

When the overload is removed the limiter resets itself thus requiring no manual attention.

  • Torque range from 2.5 to 2,000 Nm
  • Maximum bores to 100mm
  • Various model options including flexible coupling, high sensitivity axial release types
