Solar Turbines Australia were looking for a new way to heat compressor housings while repairing their turbines. They were using oxy-acetylene torches to heat and expand compressor housings and remove the end caps. Using gas torches meant that Solar Turbines had to use valuable resources just to heat the housings. SBH Solutions were more than happy to help and come up with a unique solution for this challenging problem.
Initially, Solar Turbines were going for the LMK heating jackets to wrap around the housings but SBH suggested using short wave infrared heaters instead. The 2000-watt Heliosa Titan infrared heaters can instantly reach operating temperatures which saves valuable time. 3 Heliosa Titans were powerful enough to heat the compressor housing evenly. The heaters were a significant improvement over the oxy-acetylene torches which require more time, manpower and equipment. The Titans heated the housing at a much faster rate than previous methods. They also saved manpower since the heaters could be left switched on till the housing reached the required temperature.
The heaters found their way into other processes in the factory that needed heating thanks to the heater’s versatility and long life of up to 7000 hours.
