This includes the Australian Freight Labelling Guideline and the Australian Transport EDI User Guides.
The Australian Freight Labelling Guideline provides support and guidance to industry on how to physically identify and label logistics and transport units to support efficient transport management processes and provide complete visibility from point of origin to destination.
How the new label works
- Each logistics unit will be identified with a unique serial number, the Serial Shipping Container Code (SSCC).
- The SSCC is made up of a GS1 Company Prefix which identifies the company that has created the logistic or transport unit, and a Serial Reference number which uniquely identifies each unit.
- By scanning the barcode (which includes the SSCC), the physical movement of the logistics unit can be matched with the electronic business messages that refer to them.

Easier Tracking
This means that freight can be tracked by all parties involved through the supply chain using a single tracking identifier, without the need to re-label the freight during the shipping process.
Multi-Carrier Compatible
It allows for transparency across multiple carriers, as well as the ability to implement an array of applications such as cross docking, shipment routing and automated receiving.
No Need for Re-Labelling
In addition to this, eliminating the need to re-label freight throughout a multi-leg supply chain provides obvious benefits in terms of improved productivity and reduced costs in the supply chain.
3 Types of Label
Three types of labels have been developed in order to assist with automation for freight labelling within Australia
- Consolidated transport label - Applied when the delivery destination is known at the time the freight is constructed and the cargo owner is able to produce both components in one label.
- Two part transport and logistics label - Used when the freight already has an SSCC label affixed by the cargo owner prior to knowing its final destination. The transport label is applied as an additional label containing the information required in the transport process.
- Transport only label - The Transport Only Label is applied when the freight does not have a Serial Shipping Container Code label (SSCC) applied and the receiver of the freight does not require a SSCC logistics label. This label may also be used when the freight owner is not a GS1 Member and the earliest Transport & Logistics Provider in the chain applies a unique freight label using their GS1 number range.
