Material Handling | Stair Climbers
This is not only far better from an OH&S perspective, it also further lessens the risk of goods being damaged.
A hand-held remote control is used to operate the battery-electric, rubber-tracked unit, which can move items weighing up to 500kg.
At the start of an operation, the remote control is used to gently tilt the item attached to the stair-climber until it is lying back against the stairs.
The unit is then driven without manual assistance to a landing, or the top or bottom of the stairs, where it is remotely tilted to an upright position, and turned.
Sensitive Freight Solutions, which specialises in moving equipment for data centres, used one of the new stair-climbers to move a UPS (uninterrupted power supply) unit.
"It's a very good unit because it completely takes away the use of raw power, and reduces the risk to the men using it," said Neville Cox, managing director of Sensitive Freight Solutions.
"The best thing about it is that there is no manual tilting and turning," Siaki Tautaiolefua, who operated the stair-climber, said.
"It's all done by remote control."
Sensitive Freight Solutions regularly hires Kennards Lift & Shift's specialist equipment to meet site challenges.
"Most of our jobs have lift access or we can use a forklift, but from time to time we need stair-climbers," Neville Cox said.
"Other times, we might hire skates or other moving trolleys.
"We do a lot of work other people won't touch, because of site difficulties. UPS units are a big part of our work, and we move anything from 20kVA, weighing about 300kg, up to units which are close to 6 tonne.
"We rely on good equipment, and hire exclusively from Kennards Lift & Shift because we know their equipment is properly maintained and serviced. The service from the team at the Silverwater hire centre is brilliant."
Kennards Lift & Shift has hire centres in Perth, Adelaide, Melbourne (two outlets), Sydney, Brisbane and Townsville.
