The PA Hilton HST8 Plastic Bending of Portals contains two portal frames, one pitched and one regular, which are mounted within two ground supports in either a pinned or fixed connection. The HST8 Plastic Bending of Portals also contains a proportioning bar, held together horizontally by two loading chains, that run to the portal frame and to the screw jack loading mechanism. The extent of the loading applied either horizontally or vertically is dependent on the on the position of the loading mechanism.
A load cell, fed directly to the HD200 Interface (sold separately) is used to measure the applied load in the loading mechanism. Two moveable dial gauges are used to monitor deflections into the plastic range of deformation of the portal.
The HST8 Plastic Bending of Portals verifies that hinges occur at positions of greatest bending moment. It is also capable of studying the change in the collapse mechanism as the ratio of horizontal to vertical load is changed. It is also capable of determining the collapse load as the degree of redundancy increases.
